Homeowner Guidelines: Ensuring the Safety of Your Property and Pets When Granting House Sitter access

PetCloud empowers pet owners to make wiser decisions when choosing independent sitters. The following guidelines are designed to help homeowners take reasonable steps to protect their pets, property, and personal safety when granting a sitter access to their home.

1. Carefully Select a House Sitter

Before confirming a booking, homeowners should:

  • Review the sitter’s profile, experience, and reviews

  • Ask questions about routines, availability, and prior experience

  • Conduct a meet-and-greet where possible

  • Ensure the sitter is comfortable with your pet’s specific needs and temperament

PetCloud does not select or recommend sitters on your behalf — the choice is yours.

2. Conduct a Meet & Greet at the Property

Whenever possible:

  • Meet the sitter at your home before the booking

  • Walk them through areas they will access

  • Explain any hazards, alarms, gates, or security features

  • Observe how your pet interacts with the sitter

This helps confirm suitability and reduces misunderstandings.

3. Secure Valuables and Personal Items

Before granting access:

  • Lock away valuables, sensitive documents, medications, and cash

  • Secure rooms or areas that are off-limits

  • Avoid leaving personal or confidential items in plain view

Grant access only to areas required for pet care.

4. Provide Clear Instructions in Writing

Homeowners should provide clear, written guidance covering:

  • Feeding schedules and quantities

  • Walking routines and restrictions

  • Medication instructions (if applicable)

  • Emergency contacts and preferred veterinarian

  • House rules (e.g. guests, smoking, restricted rooms)

Clear instructions help reduce risk and confusion.

5. Keys, Codes, and Access

When providing access:

  • Share only the minimum access required

  • Change alarm codes or smart lock access after the booking if appropriate

  • Avoid sharing permanent codes when temporary access is available

  • Confirm how and when keys will be returned

  • Request the person's week day versus weekend schedule and how long they can stay over night at the property every night.

  • Ask whether they plan to have any friends, family, or boyfriends accompanying them so that they can be interviewed by you and police checked too.

Notes
Check out the Eufy Security Video Smart Lock if you wish to install a Video Security surveilance system that has a HD camera, a smart door lock, doorbell, detailed entry and exit logs in a remote monitoring app, and includes local video storage with no monthly fees. You will pay monthly fees with cloud-hosted video but it may be safer from deletion by anyone in the house.

6. Disclose Pet Behaviour and Health Accurately

For everyone’s safety, homeowners must:

  • Disclose any known aggression, anxiety, medical conditions, or special needs

  • Inform sitters of triggers, fears, or escape risks

  • Provide accurate and up-to-date information

Incomplete or inaccurate disclosure increases risk.

7. Insurance Awareness

Homeowners are responsible for ensuring:

  • Home and contents insurance is current

  • Any pet insurance is appropriate for the services booked

PetCloud does not insure homeowner property or guarantee compensation for loss or damage.

8. Maintain Communication Through the Platform

During the booking:

  • Communicate through the PetCloud platform where possible

  • Request updates if needed

  • Address concerns early rather than after the booking ends

Clear communication helps prevent disputes.

9. Trust Your Judgment

If at any point you feel uncomfortable:

  • Do not proceed with the booking

  • Cancel before access is granted

  • Contact PetCloud support if needed

You are never obligated to proceed if something does not feel right.

10. Understand Responsibility

By booking through PetCloud, homeowners acknowledge that:

  • Granting access to a sitter is their decision

  • PetCloud does not supervise or monitor sitters

  • Sitters are independent individuals, not employees of PetCloud

  • Some risks are inherent in pet care and home access
